If you're planning a visit to Arundel Castle, where you stay matters. The castle sits at the very top of the High Street, and the town that stretches below it is compact, walkable and full of character. Staying in the heart of Arundel rather than on its outskirts means you can walk to the castle gates in minutes, explore the town at your own pace, and be back at your room for a rest before dinner — no driving, no parking, no rushing.
Here's everything you need to know about staying near Arundel Castle.
How Close is Close Enough?
Arundel is a small town, but the difference between staying on the High Street and staying a mile or two outside it is significant. The castle entrance is at the bottom of the High Street, near the Mill Road car park — so properties on or directly off the High Street are genuinely within a two to three minute walk.
Properties outside the town centre, however charming, require a car or a 15–20 minute walk along roads that aren't always pedestrian-friendly. If you're visiting the castle as your main reason for the trip, staying central is the obvious choice.
House Arundel — Steps from the Castle Gates
House Arundel sits at 11 High Street — directly below the castle, in a Grade II listed building dating back to the 1730s. You can see the castle towers from the street outside. It is, without question, the closest boutique accommodation to Arundel Castle in the town.
Our five rooms — The Queen, The Duke, The Duchess, The Earl and The Countess — are individually designed and finished to a high standard, with king-sized beds, en-suite rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries from Faith in Nature. The building itself has genuine historic character, with period features throughout that feel entirely in keeping with a stay so close to a medieval castle.
We open our bar to guests and the public on Friday and Saturday evenings — a lovely way to round off a day at the castle with a well-made cocktail without having to go anywhere.
Visiting Arundel Castle — What to Know
Arundel Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England and has been continuously inhabited for nearly 1,000 years. It remains the family home of the Duke of Norfolk.
The castle is typically open from April to October, Tuesday to Sunday. It's closed in winter, so if you're planning a stay specifically to visit the castle, check the opening dates before booking. Pre-booking tickets online is strongly recommended in peak season — the castle can get busy, particularly in school holidays and during special events.
Allow at least two to three hours for a full visit, more if you want to explore the gardens in depth. The Collector Earl's Garden and the Cut Flower Garden are both particularly beautiful in late spring and summer.
The castle also hosts a number of special events throughout the season including jousting, open air theatre and the famous Arundel Festival in August — if your visit coincides with any of these, book accommodation well in advance as the town fills up quickly.
Beyond the Castle — Making the Most of Your Stay
Arundel has more than enough to fill a full weekend beyond the castle itself. The cathedral is five minutes' walk away and free to enter — the Victorian Gothic interior is stunning. The WWT Arundel Wetland Centre is a short walk down to the river and well worth a half day, particularly for birdwatchers or families.
The High Street and surrounding streets are lined with independent shops, antique dealers and galleries. Pallant of Arundel is an excellent deli for picking up local produce, and there are several excellent places to eat within easy walking distance of House Arundel — including La Campania for Italian, St Mary's Gate Inn for traditional pub food, and The Parsons Table for something a little more special.
For breakfast, we've partnered with The Moathouse Café next door (open daily) and Juniper on Tarrant Street (open Wednesday to Saturday) — both excellent, and included in our optional breakfast voucher scheme when you book direct.
Getting to Arundel
By train, Arundel is served by direct services from London Victoria (around 90 minutes) and is on the line between Brighton and Chichester. The station is a 10-minute walk from House Arundel and the castle.
By car, Arundel is just off the A27 between Chichester and Worthing. Parking is available on Mill Road — a 40-second walk from us — and is very reasonable for an overnight stay.
